Job Summary
The Financial Counselor plays a vital role in guiding patients through the complexities of health insurance and financial assistance programs. This position involves verifying insurance eligibility, assisting with application for Medicaid (MassHealth), MA Health Connector and other state health programs, and assists with applications for health center discounts. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of insurance programs, and a passion for helping patients navigate their financial challenges.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- 1 year of experience in a professional office environment preferred
- CAC Certification required within 10 days of employment
- Experience with reimbursement, medical plans and Medicaid preferred
- Excellent data entry and organization skills and verbal and written communication skills
- Vaccination against Covid-19 is required
Representative Job Duties
- Insurance Verification and Eligibility:
- Verify insurance eligibility and benefits using Epic’s real-time eligibility function, payer websites such as MMIS/ Virtual Gateway and the WellSense provider portal, or by calling insurance carriers
- Documenting any insurance changes in patient charts to maintain accurate patient records
- Application Assistance:
- Learn and understand MassHealth and Health Connector application, eligibility, and enrollment processes by first completing Certified Application Counselor (CAC) training
- Assist patients in applying for and selecting MassHealth or Health Connector plans
- Act as a liaison between patients and state agencies to ensure that the patient applications are being processed in a timely manner
- Financial Counseling and Advocacy:
- Counsel patients on discount option and payment plan options available according to organizational guidelines
- Support patients who are having difficulty accessing prescriptions at our on-site pharmacy
- Schedule patient appointments and address walk-ins as able
- Provide ongoing advocacy between patients and insurers as required
- Administrative Duties:
- Manage correspondence from MassHealth
- Maintain accurate records
- Perform clerical duties, including operating standard office equipment like fax/copy machines, scanners, etc.
- Communication and Collaboration:
- Answer phone and MyChart inquiries from patients and staff regarding Medicaid or Health Connector questions
- Act as a liaison between patients and the pharmacy to resolve any insurance-related issues
- Foster positive relationships with practice management and enhance understanding of patient concerns
- Training and Compliance:
- Uphold the highest standard of HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality
- Stay updated on state health insurance requirements
- Complete all financial counseling training including annual CAC certification
- Educate health center staff on health insurance related topics as needed
- All other duties as assigned by Supervisor
