Job Summary

The OBAT Registered Nurse promotes and restores patient’s health in the area of opioid addiction as she/he prescribes, provides, delegates, evaluates and coordinates comprehensive professional nursing care through the use of the nursing process for patients of all ages, gender, cultures, and background; provides physical and psycho-social support to patients, friends, and families. This individual may oversee clinical care of other personnel including Medical Assistants. This position works closely with prescribing providers and maintains all necessary documentation. The OBAT Registered Nurse also collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to improve safety for patients with chronic, non-cancer pain who are being treated with long-team opioids.  This RN position will also dedicate some of their schedule to providing nursing in the primary care departments.

Qualifications

Degree from an accredited school of registered nursing; active license for Registered nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Experience with addiction nursing preferred.

COVID-19 vaccine and booster required for employment.

Representative Job Duties

  • Performs initial assessment and intake, obtaining social, medical, mental health, substance abuse, and medication history.
  • Reviews intake assessment with the OBAT clinical team to determine patient condition, readiness, and eligibility for study enrollment, and to establish an appropriate plan of care.
  • Ensures collaboration and communication with the OBAT team and participates in meetings as needed.
  • Provides ongoing education and proactive support to patients, coordinating services.
  • Assists in creating clinical forms and completes documentation with excellent record keeping.
  • Collects pertinent data using appropriate assessment techniques.
  • Uses clear, concise, and effective communication in both written and oral formats, complying with departmental policies.
  • Collects specimens (e.g., oral swabs) and takes clinical actions per protocol.
  • Works with the pharmacy and OBAT clinic team to obtain medication orders, prescription refills, and necessary communication.
  • Counsels patients on relapse prevention and pharmacotherapy, providing follow-up care in person and via telephone, and assists in scheduling clinical visits.
  • Assists in other primary care and addiction-related projects and collects data for the Bureau of Substance Abuse Services on new patients, quarterly, and at discharge.
  • Maintenance of the controlled substance registry
  • Assists in phone triage, prescription refills, and follow-up of test results, critical values, and medical issues.
  • Utilizes the nursing process consistently and effectively to provide timely, safe, and appropriate patient/family care.
  • Prioritizes data according to patient conditions and involves patients, significant others, and health care providers in data collection when appropriate.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills and documents appropriate diagnoses from patient and family assessment.
  • Identifies and documents expected outcomes individualized to patients and provides follow-up care as needed.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-specific care and consults appropriate resources when needed.
  • Delegates patient care activities effectively to coworkers and demonstrates technical competence in patient care needs.
  • Maintains a safe and clean environment through appropriate risk management practices.
  • Practices in compliance with established standards, policies, procedures, protocols, and regulations, completing all mandatory requirements.
  • Provides basic education to patients and families, focusing on self-care appropriate to their age and needs.
  • Demonstrates professionalism and composure during peak activity periods and emergencies.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned.
  • Reviews departmental goals with each patient caregiver to facilitate role and clinical expertise.
  • Evaluates departmental acuity based on provider schedules when making staffing decisions.
  • Informs the Director of Adult Medicine of any anticipated or actual issues/problems.
  • Stays updated on new policies and procedures and monitors the implementation of clinical practice standards.
  • Responds to emergencies and disasters within the organization and fosters exceptional public relations for the Health Center.
