Prioritize Your Health: Breast Cancer Awareness Starts with You

By: Shannon Lydon, NP

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This is a time to reflect on the importance of preventive care and early detection. At South Boston Community Health Center, we’re deeply committed to supporting women’s health and ensuring our community has access to compassionate, high-quality care. One of the most effective tools we have in the fight against breast cancer is a mammogram.

Why Mammograms Matter

A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray that helps detect changes in breast tissue, often before any symptoms appear. This early detection can lead to more treatment options and better outcomes. Trusted organizations like the CDC and the American Cancer Society emphasize the value of regular screenings, especially for those at higher risk.

When to Start Screening

The general recommendation is to begin discussing screening around age 40. However, individual factors like family history or personal risk may influence that timeline. It’s always best to talk with a healthcare provider to determine what’s right for you. While most guidance is directed at women, it’s important to remember that breast cancer can affect people of all genders.

An Act of Self-Care

We understand that getting a mammogram might feel daunting. You may be concerned about discomfort, time constraints, or whether it’s really necessary. These are common and valid concerns. At SBCHC, our team is here to make the experience as comfortable and reassuring as possible. The procedure is quick, and our staff is trained to provide safe, respectful care. Think of it as an act of self-care — a way to prioritize your health and peace of mind.

Let’s Support Each Other

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a reminder to check in with ourselves and each other. Whether it’s scheduling your own screening or encouraging a friend to do the same, these conversations matter. Let’s support one another in making health a priority, not just in October but all year long.
